Nic Nicosia Curates Sarah Canright at CUE

Opening tomorrow in New York at CUE Art Foundation, a show of work by artist Sarah Canright, curated by Nic Nicosia. Nic Nicosia writes of the curatorial assignment:

“I was to select an artist (preferably an under recognized artist) who didn’t have any gallery affiliation, has not had any recent museum shows and has not had a show in NYC for at least 10 years. I was introduced to Sarah Canright who teaches painting at UT and was mesmerized by her paintings. Although she was quite active in NYC in the early 1970’s and involved with the Chicago Imagists ( including Ed Paschke, Jim Nutt, Ed Flood and others) she has not had a solo show in NYC since 1985.

I selected her for: amazing work, totally under appreciated, the resolve and maturity of her work (all the right reasons).”

Nicosia writes of being struck by the emotional density of the artist’s work, watercolor paintings of greyhounds. Young critic Bethany Johnson contributed a catalog essay on the greyhounds “as compositional form and psychological subject.” What began, writes Johnson, as impulsive and spontaneous activity after the death of the artist’s pet greyhound in 2000 has morphed into this significant body of work.

“Painting is essentially an abstract experience,” writes Canright.

The show is on view at CUE Art Foundation, 511 West 25th Street, New York, NY from November 19-January 14, 2012.
